It all started a short while ago in 2005, we were living in Calgary
and had always dreamed of living outside of the city. Life always
seem to get busier, between the traffic and your many neighbours, so
we found a place where we all had room to grow and get some fresh
air. Scott is very much an animal person so we knew we were going to have livestock of some kind, and that is when Scott discovered alpacas. He talked to a couple of farms and everyone just seemed so helpful. Scott seemed very passionate about these animals, being a bit of a skeptic I needed to see this for myself. We had gone out for a drive on a Sunday afternoon and to my surprise we found ourselves at an Alpaca farm. This was the first experience for me. I was wowed!! We walked in to the pasture and I felt a rush of calmness come over me. I can only compare it to the feeling you get when you're around dolphins. Just Wow! We spent a couple of hours at that farm getting familiar with the Alpaca behaviour and their needs as far as shelter and feed. We left that day and knew for sure that was the animal for us and our family. At this point though we hadn't even taken possession of our new home and land but purchased our small herd of five Alpacas, four females and one male. When we did move to the new place, you would think that the first thing you would want to do is paint and make the home yours. Not us, we started on the pasture and shelters, removing and replacing things before our animals came. We were so excited we spent every moment we could outside getting prepared. When we were mostly ready the Alpacas came. I was worried we wouldn't feel the peace and calm but I was wrong. There it was, such a wonderful feeling so we spent a lot of time out in our pastures loving every moment of it. We bought every book we could find to get right in to learning. We had attended a couple of shows without animals just to get a feel for things and were pleasantly surprised. Everyone was so warm and welcoming and helpful. We didn't feel as though it was a competition between farms at all it was more like a bunch of friends with this in common just getting together. What a refreshing change from life in the everyday. The next year we entered some shows with our animals met more people. Our first year and we came home with two 4th place ribbons' and one 1st place ribbon. We were off to a really good start. We now have a herd of seventeen animals and four more still to come this summer. As for our name, ours lives have been busy since we got married 8 years ago. We have moved many times and changed careers as well. Many people said to us " you have crazy lives" with that and our son's love for the Spanish language we came up with "Vida Loca Alpacas" Vida Loca means "crazy life" but our tag line is everything we wanted "Calming the crazy life" It sums everything up, we have found our calm in our crazy lives. |
